Abstract

1518097 Filter elements DOMNICK HUNTER ENGS Ltd 9 Oct 1975 [16 Oct 1974] 44911/74 Headings B1D and BIT A tubular filter element comprises a sleeve of resin-bonded fibres 8 supported by a downstream foraminous sleeve 7, both embedded in annular end caps by silicone rubber or epoxy resin sealant, with a helical spring 10 or a second foraminous sleeve supported by a spring supporting the upstream side of sleeve 8 against possible reversal of flow. Spring 10 may be removable. An additional outer sleeve of porous plastics 9 is shown, which acts as a coalescer of liquid droplets in the outward flow gas filter element illustrated. In inward flow elements (Figs. 1, 3 not shown) the plastics sleeve 9 acts as a prefilter. Sleeve 8 may comprise borosilicate glass fibres (diameters 0.5 to 4 microns) bonded with expoxy or formaldehyde resin, to give pore sizes 1 to 40 microns. Sleeve 7 may be expanded metal sheet, woven wire or internally ribbed polypropylene (Fig. 3). Spring 10 may be stainless steel or mild steel plated with cadmium or chromium. End caps may be phenolic resin, aluminium or stainless steel. The element may be cylindrical, frusto-conical or square in section. The element may remove germs from air in a sterilizer or remove oil droplets from compressed air.
