Abstract

1518092 Change speed gear; friction clutches AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 2 Oct 1975 [2 Oct 1974] 42813/74 Headings F2C and F2D In an automatic speed-load responsive transmission on a motor vehicle, having fluidpressure-engaged ratio-establishing friction clutches and brakes, an operating cylinder 38 of an input- or output-connected selector clutch 29, Fig. 2, receives its pressure liquid through a stationary floating annular muff 47 which bears slidingly on the cylindrical surface 39 of the rotating cylinder 38 and is restrained against only rotary and axial movement respectively by a fixed tongue 70, Fig. 5, and a washer 74, Fig. 2, retained by a snap ring 78. Pressure liquid is conveyed to a radial inlet of the muff 47 from a selector valve block 71, Fig. 5, by a pipe 79 having seals at each end which allow the muff adaptive freedom. The valve block 71 is itself supported only by bolting at 84 to the delivery pipe 81 of the input driven pump 82, Fig. 1. Gear arrangement.-In the transverse-engine layout shown, stepped bevel planets on a freely mounted carrier 65, Fig. 2 and 3, mesh a large output side wheel 56 fast on an output sleeve 14, and two small input side wheels 54, 55 selectively driven through a torque converter 15 and input clutches 29, 24 respectively. For all three forward ratios the clutch 24 is engaged. Automatic and manual low are by a one-way brake 60 and band brake 66 on the carrier 65; second by a band brake 64 on the side wheel 54; third, direct, by both clutches 24, 29; and reverse by a separate band brake 67 acting on the carrier 65 independently of the manual low brake 66. The output sleeve 14 drives a final differential 62, Fig. 1, through meshed wheels 57, 58, a layshaft 59 and meshed wheels 61. A notched wheel 99 on the layshaft 59 is for engagement by a park lock pawl 98, described below. Brakes.-The manual low and second ratio brake bands 66, 64 are each supported at one end by a fixed stop, and actuated on the other end by a tangential piston rod, that for the brake 66 acting directly, whilst that for 64 acts through a coiled compressor spring (80, Fig. 9, not shown). Grub screws (87, 88) in the cylinder heads limit release movement of the pistons. The reverse band stop (95, Fig. 8, not shown) is adjustable and its piston rod is screw-adjustable in the piston, and operates the end of the reverse band 67 through a lever (94), the direction of wrap being opposite to that of the other two bands. Park lock pawl (98, Figs. 11 and 12, not shown) is spring-biased out of engagement with the layshaft wheel 99, Fig. 1, and is pivoted between two fixed surfaces (106) by a transversely slidable wedge (102) actuated through a spring (104) by a rod (103) linked to the selector valve control.
