Abstract

1517802 Control lever assembly SHIMANO INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 21 July 1975 [31 July 1974] 30415/75 Heading B7E A control lever assembly for a bicycle gear change mechanism comprises a band 1 adapted to be clamped around a bicycle frame member A, an integral spigot projecting radially outwardly from the band and having an inner portion 11 of non-circular, e.g. square, cross section and an outer portion 12 of circular cross section, a base plate 3 having a non-circular aperture corresponding to the cross section of the spigot portion 11 and by means of whidh the plate is non- rotatably mounted on the portion 11, a lever 4 provided with means for retaining an operating wire of the gear change mechanism and having a circular aperture by means of which it is rotatably mounted on the spigot portion 12, and a bolt 6 screw-threadedly engaged with an internal screw-thread of the spigot portion 12 to urge the lever 4 towards the base plate 3 thereby applying resistance to rotation of the lever about the spigot. In the illustrated embodiment the base plate 3 is provided with stops 31, 32 for limiting rotation of the lever 4 and has an upstanding portion 33 provided with an aperture through which the operating wire can pass to be received in a groove 4a in the lever 4. Washers 7, 8 of diureide synthetic resin are provided on respective sides of the lever 4 and a cover member 5 is interposed between the head of the bolt 6 and the washer 8. The cover member is provided with a hollow cylindrical portion 51 for retaining a sheath surrounding the operating wire and has an aperture receiving a lug 34 at the free end of the portion 33 of the plate 3 so that the cover member is also non-rotatable. The band 1 is clamped in use to the frame member A by means of a bolt 2 extending through apertures in lugs bent out from the ends of the band, and may, as shown, be provided with two spigots each mounting a lever 4 and associated components.
