Abstract

1517666 Welded rail joints BOC Ltd 2 Nov 1976 [14 Nov 1975] 45577/76 Heading EIG [Also in Division B3] In consumable guide tube electro-slag welding, e.g. of railway rails, one or more receptacles (e.g. steel) are secured to the exterior of the guide tube or tubes intermediate the ends thereof and additives (e.g. Fe Mn) placed and sealed in said receptacle(s) are released, by welding heat, into the weld metal at a predetermined stage or stages of the welding, e.g. to increase weld metal hardness at the rail head. As shown, three guide tubes I (e.g. of 0.08 - 0.13C, 0.30 - 0.60 Mn) are spot or tack welded to a retaining plate 2. The outer two tubes are splayed to accommodate rail cross section. Mild steel capsules 3 are spot or tack welded to the two outer tubes so that bases thereof are 12-15 mm above the top 4 of the rail head so that release of contained FeMn into the melt, by reflected heat, commences when the slag pool is 6-8 mm below the capsules. Melt is retained by four watercooled copper shoe quarters clamped together to conform to the rail cross section. Flux may be coated on the guide tube surfaces or added by a metering orifice or by hand.
