Abstract
151,733. Farlow, C. F. June 30, 1919. Permanently-applied.-A fishing-reel is provided with an automatic brake for preventing the bobbin overrunning the line during casting. A brake-lever 5, pivoted at its inner end 10 to a back-plate 2 of a winch, is disposed between and transversely to the back-plate 2 and the contiguous face of the bobbin 3, and, passing through a slot 6 in the winch-frame 1, terminates in a loop 7 through which the line passes. On the inner half of the lever 5 is mounted a brake-block 11 having an inclined surface 12, adapted to bear on a corresponding inclined surface 14 of a plate 13, mounted on the back-plate, under the influence of a hair-spring 15 whenever the line slackens through overrunning of the bobbin, the brake becoming inoperative again when the line tightens. The plate 13 may be of segmental shape and mounted on the outer surface of the back-plate through the medium of the pivot-pin 10, the inclined surface 14 projecting through an arc-shaped slot 17 in the back-plate so that the position of the inclined surface can be adjusted so as to determine the angular movement of the brake-lever required before braking of the bobbin is effected, and the plate can be clamped in position by means of a screw 18 engaging with screwthreads in the back-plate. A stop-pin 16 prevents the brake-block 11 becoming wedged between the plate 13 and the face of the bobbin 3. Various modifications are described. The lever may be mounted to turn on its axis under the control of a coil-spring. The inner end of the lever may be rotatably mounted on a stud and be formed with a cross-piece provided with blocks, which are adapted to engage with inclined surfaces of a block secured to the back-plate, or the cross-piece may be replaced by a circular plate formed with a cam surface, adapted to co-operate with a cam surface on the plate secured to the back plate. The inner end of the lever may be provided with a tail-piece adapted to bear against the inner surface of an annular flange on the face of the bobbin, or it may be secured to a pin supported in a rotatable ring in which case the brake block is also adapted for limited rotation. A short lever, mounted intermediate its ends on a pin inclined at an angle to the axis of the winch, may be employed.
