Abstract

1517231 Counting by weighing NATIONAL CONTROLS Inc 2 April 1976 13520/76 Addition to 1517220 Heading G1W A group of articles is "counted" by first weighing a sample of a known number of the articles, storing a digital representation of this, weighing the group, and calculating the number of articles in the group. The weighing is done by a load platform (14) connected by a central stalk to a straingauge load cell 13 arranged to be insensitive to lop-sidedness of the load and the electric signals obtained digitized by a dual ramp A-to-D converter 79. A microprocessor performs the storing and calculating, the weight and number of articles in the group being displayed and printed. The weights used for the calculation are averages of 16 consecutive conversions from 79 which must all lie within certain limits of the average to be accepted. A tare facility is provided. If the load is below a certain level, the load platform is assumed to be empty and an automatic zero drift correction routine is initiated in which the zero error is iteratively stepped to zero. If the sample size is too small for accurate calculation, the count indicator shows ADD as a warning. The sample size is selectable, e.g. 8, 16, 32 or 64.
