Abstract

1516894 Photo-sensitive materials CIBA GIEGY AG 11 June 1975 25036/75 Heading G2C [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] A light-sensitive layer on a support comprises (1) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer soluble in water or in a water/alcohol mixture and which contains one or more terminal double bonds and at least one polar atom grouping with one atom having a lone electron pair; (2) a photo-initiation, which forms a photo-redox system with either the monomer (1) and/or with the binder (3)(a), and has a ring system of Formula: in which Z is N or C-R, R being H or a substituent and the compound is optionally quaternised; and (3) as a binder a swellable developer solvent insoluble reaction product of at least one (a) macromolecular binder which is soluble in water or a water/alcohol mixture and which has at least one polar atom grouping with one atom containing a lone electron pair, with (b) a hardener, which is different from the monomer (1); and optionally (4) a chemically inert macromolecular binder which does not react with the binder (3)(a) or hardener (3)(b). Binder (3)(a) is preferably gelatine, chemically modified gelatine, polyvinyl, alcohol, optionally hydrolyzed copolymers of maleic anhydride and olefins or copolymers of methylvinyl ether and maleic anhydride. Binder (4) is preferably polyacrylamide, poly-N- vinylpyrrolidone, or poly-N-vinylcarbazole. Monomers mentioned as (meth)acrylic acids and their salts, optionally substituted (meth)acrylamides, N-vinylpyrrolidone, vinylsulphonic acid and sulphoacrylates. The support e.g. cellulose triacetate may have a subbing gelatine layer and the light-sensitive layer may contain a dye, or be dyed after imagewise exposure and development with water.
