Abstract

1516453 Applying liquid to printing plates GESTETNER Ltd 3 Feb 1977 [12 Feb 1976] 05603/76 Heading B6C Liquid-applying apparatus, e.g. for damping or etching a lithographic plate, comprises a reservoir 16 containing a wick 17 held by two plates 18 which are adjustably spaced, the shape of the plates being such that at least one zone of the wick is compressed by the plates to a greater extent than the other parts of the wick which are compressed by the plates. The wick and plates may be so shaped as to be reversible end for end. Resilient pad 19 urges the wick against stops 20 and 35, and so against transfer roller 15, which may have two spiral threads in its surface of opposite hand in each axial half length. The applicator roller 14 may have drive tyres contacting a non-printing part of plate cylinder 10, the transfer roller having milled wheel edges driven by the tyres. Applicator roller may include cam surfaces which co-operate with follower 50 to axially reciprocate the reservoir-wick-transfer roller assembly. Plate cylinder 10 may have curved plates 38 bridging the gutter in the area occupied by the tyres.
