Abstract

1516216 Bursting discs E ANDREWS and A STEVENSON 3 Sept 1976 [6 June 1975] 24394/75 Heading F1D A bursting disc 1, Fig. 1, has a groove 9 in one surface which provides a line of weakness in which the stresses are concentrated and the arrangement is such that the bursting pressure may be calculated from the dimensions and position of the groove together with the overall dimensions of the disc. As described, the disc is machined from a billet of cured epoxy resin or any brittle solid, e.g. glass, glass ceramics, non-porous ceramics, and the groove 9 is machined to a predetermined depth 10 and an angle of 20 degrees. In an alternative construction; to restrain the central portion of the disc when bursting occurs, one or more pieces of wire are embedded in the disc during moulding. Fig. 5 shows a suitable mould. The wire is surface treated to form a good bond. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the groove is provided by a thin foil of non- adhering material, e.g. P.T.F.E., embedded in the disc. Fig. 6 shows an embodiment in which a billet of epoxy resin is cast on to a metallic holder 2 with a circular foil 3 of P.T.F.E. forming the groove. The holder screws on to the pressure vessel.
