Abstract
1516145 Solvent extraction of coal LUMMUS CO 27 Aug 1975 [6 Sept 1974] 35427/75 Addition to 1452297 Heading C5E Coal liquefaction product produced by digesting coal with a coal liquefaction solvent is treated in a series of at least two gravity settlers to produce a net overflow from the final settler which is substantially free of insoluble material; the settling is promoted by introducing into each of the gravity settlers a fresh liquid promoter having a characterization factor of at least 9À75, a 5 volume per cent distillation temperature of at least 250‹F and a 95 volume per cent distillation temperature of at least 350‹F and no greater than 750‹F. Suitable promoter liquids are kerosene, middle distillate, gas oil, white oils, heavy naphtha and naphthalenes. The gravity settling can be carried out at 300-600‹F and 0-500 psig using a total of 0À2 to 3 parts by weight of the promoter per part of the coal liquefaction product. Coal 10 is digested with a 600-900‹F coal liquefaction solvent 12 in zone 14 under catalytic or non-catalytic conditions in the presence or absence of added hydrogen. Components boiling below 600‹F are removed at 16 and, after the addition of a 425-500‹F kerosene promoter liquid 18, the coal liquefaction product is separated at 24 into a solidsenriched underflow 27 and a solids-lean overflow 26. The overflow 26 is further separated at 25 after the addition of more promoter liquid 28 to produce a solids-rich underflow 32 and a substantially solids-free overflow 31. Components 53 boiling below 900‹F are stripped from the combined underflows 51 and passed together with the overflow 31 to the recovery zone 41.
