Abstract
1515976 Reservoir pens BAUMGARTNER PAPIERS SA 12 May 1976 [30 May 1975 17 July 1975] 19456/76 Addition to 1478719 19 Heading A4K [Also in Divisions A2, D1 and H5] To form a fibrous pen core a tow of filamentary dielectric material is bonded by passing the tow through at least one resonant cavity in an electric field having a frequency between 3 x 10<SP>8</SP> and 3 x 10<SP>11</SP> Hz and a hot gas is injected into contact with the tow in the resonant cavity or cavities. The outside of the tow is heated by the gas and the inside by dielectric heating. Preferably the tow is of cellulose acetate filaments impregnated with triacetin as a heat activatable binder (plasticizer), and the gas e.g. water, methanol, ethanol or propanol has a higher dielectric constant than that of the filaments and binder. Alternatively air may be used as the gas. The bonded rod may be used as a cigarette filter, no paper wrapping being required, or a pen core. The Micro-wave heating apparatus is modified from that disclosed in Specification 1478719 in that each cavity has an orifice for injecting the gas or mixture of gases under pressure, the tube for guiding the tow through the cavities is either perforated or replaced by tube segments between the adjoining cavities and the belt which wraps around and conveys the tow is woven so as to be permeable to the gas. The gas is pre-heated before entering the cavities and if of higher dielectric constant than the tow it will absorb heat from the electric field and transfer it to the tow.
