Abstract
1515688 Multi-cell battery DUNLOP AUSTRALIA Ltd 25 Nov 1975 [25 Nov 1974] 48470/75 Heading H1B A multi-cell battery includes a plurality of frames of mouldable electrically insulating material inert under battery use conditions, each frame defining a plurality of separate material support areas 22, 23, 24 side-by-side across the frame, each frame having dividers 20, 20a between said areas, the frames being stacked normal to their width with said dividers of adjacent frames mutually sealed, active battery material in each said area to form a plate of the battery, arranged so that adjacent areas along and normal to said frames form plates of opposite polarity, and electrolyte porous separator members 32 interposed between active material of adjoining frames, said separators being supported and positively located by cooperation with at least one adjoining frame. As shown, the means for said positive location may be a shoulder 48 on a divider 20, 20a, which co-operates with an adjoining divider to give a groove 49 which holds the separator 32; in another embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) the separator is mounted in its own frame, and this frame is stacked between two adjacent materialbearing frames. The battery may be lead-acid; 31 is a gas space; 26 is a lead grid having lugs 37 for connection to similar lugs of another frame and to terminals of the battery; 26a is a lead grid joining adjacent half-cells 23 and 24; 28 is a groove for co-operation with a tongue on another frame; 33 is a porous gas-escape means; the frames may be of plastics.
