Abstract
1515344 Stuffer box crimping INDIAN HEAD INC 22 May 1975 [31 May 1974] 22097/75 Heading D1F A method of texturing a continuous filament yarn comprises the steps of; feeding the yarn into a confined crimping zone against a mass of crimped yarn; applying to the mass a pressure substantially only sufficient to crimp the yarn and maintain -the crimps closed; driving the mass to a setting zone using at least one crimp control roll; separately propelling the mass along the setting zone using means which engage the perimeter of the mass and extend along at least part of the setting zone; applying heat and pressure to said crimped yarn mass in the setting zone to set the crimps, the pressure having a value substantially only sufficient to keep the crimps closed; cooling the mass without application of a force, thereto : and withdrawing the yarn in continuous filament form. Continuous filament yarn 500, e.g. of polyester, Fig. 1, is fed through tensioner 502, over preheater 504, over traverse roll 190, and between feed rollers 68, 70, Fig. 3A, to form crimped core 510 in saddle 72 having heater 84 and, Fig. 9, a passage of elliptical crosssection. The core is advanced by toothed, crimp control rolls 122, 124 and carried by endless belt 400 through rectangular-section channel 36 defined by chamber 26 having side bars 32 and front and rear members 28, 30 having heaters 79, 81. The core is carried into cooling tower 270, Fig. 1 mounted on extended bars 32 where it may be cooled by air blown through slots in front tower member 274. Slug 300, Fig. 18, rests on the core within the tower. The yarn is withdrawn through the slug and tower guide 286 to be wound up. The vertically moving slug carries a permanent magnet to actuate tower-mounted switches to control the wind-up means and the feed and crimp control rollers to control the core size. Channel 36 is lined by friction-reducing members 33. Rollers 68, 70, Fig. 3A are wiped by saddle-mounted felts 75. Traverse roll. Roll 190, Fig. 4 comprises hollow members 192, 194 defining yarnguiding slot 212, the yarn running on a circular array of removable internal rods 218 supported by resilient cement 220. Crimp control rolls and belt. Toothed rolls 122, 124 are rotated at speeds different to that of the feed rolls to control the yarn crimp in the saddle passage. Belt 400 having pegs Fig. 15, or teeth, Fig. 16, passes round portion 154 of roll 124, and carries the core upwards at the same speed as that imparted to the core by rolls 122, 124. The belt passes, Fig. 1, over rollers 414 mounted on a pivoted, spring-biased arm, and returns to roller 124 over idler 464, Fig. 3A. Roller 124 may not be toothed. Mounting and adjustment. Chamber 26, Fig. 1, is bolted within channel-shaped member 12 whose base is bolted to frame 14. Chamber 26 is bolted to bosses on the base, the bosses having surfaces perpendicular to one another, against which the chamber is secured. Channel-shaped member 18 encloses the chamber, is pivoted at 20 to allow it to be raised, supports feed roller 68 and crimp control roll 122, and is biased by weight 172 to hold roller 68 against roller 70. At pivot 20, Fig. 24, member 18 has conical recesses whose apices 408, 410 are aligned on pivot axis 412, and member 12 has inserts 364, 380, with conical recesses whose apices 374, 388 are offset from axis 412. Balls 414, 416 support member 18. Rotation of the inserts in bores 354, 356 enables feed roll 68 to be adjusted parallel to feed roll 70. Member 12 has splits extending to bores 354, 356 to enable bolts 360 to clamp the inserts.
