1515308 Lasting shoes BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 1 Sept 1975 [31 Aug 1974] 38152/74 Heading A3B A shoe lasting machine of the type in which powered wiping rolls 2, Figs. 1, 2, having helically ribbed working faces are moved relatively to a lasted shoe assembly, has a guide 100, &c to engage a shank S secured to the shoe assembly and thus align the shoe assembly between the rolls. The guide 100 acts through automatic control mechanism to raise side clamps 30, Figs. 2, 3, to a height corresponding to that of the shoe assembly before the side clamps grip the shoe assembly firmly. A movable carriage 10, Fig. 1, mounts pivotally a jack post 12 raised to the operative position shown by a servo, a heel band 16 then engaging the shoe assembly. The guide 100 is a grooved roller which runs along a rib 104, Fig. 2, of the shank S as the jack post 12 is raised. The grooved roller 100 is journalled in an arm assembly 120 pivoted about pins 122 in the machine frame and biassed to the operative position by a pneumatic servo. In moving from its inoperative, withdrawn position to the extended position shown and before raising the jack post 12, the guide roller 100 runs down the back of a hold-down 24. As the jack post 12 raises the shoe assembly to the operative position, the roller 100 can rise also against the biass of the servo 130. The guide roller 100 thus senses the height of the shoe assembly. An arm 118, Fig. 3, of the arm assembly 120 carrying the guide roller 100, is engaged by a nose 181 at the end of a sensing arm 180 biassed to turn about its pivot 182 by a servo 190. The sensing arm is connected via a telescopic rod 200, 201 to rods 154 and blocks carrying the side clamps 30, so that as the guide roller 100 rises up the shank S, the side clamps 30 are correspondingly raised. Servos 32 engage the side clamps 30 with the shoe assembly.
