Abstract

1514908 Armour - piercing projectile MALLORY METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS Ltd 22 Jan 1974 [8 Jan 1973] 924/73 Heading F3A An armour-piercing projectile comprises a body the nose of which is formed from a metal composition possessing high overall hardness, high tensile strength and high modulus of rigidity with the remainder formed from a metal composition possessing relatively lower overall hardness, higher ductility and lower tensile strength, the two compositions having been processed together by a common powder metallurgical method to form an integral structure. Such a projectile may be made by lining a metal can 10 with a rubber bag 11, the interior shape of the can 10 being similar to that of the projectile to be produced but of somewhat larger dimensions. A first powder mixture 'A' is introduced into the nose 12 of the can 10 and the can vibrated to settle the powder, a second powder mixture B then being introduced on top of the powder 'A' and the can again vibrated to settle the powder. The filled can is then closed by a closure cap 13 after sealing the bag 11. The can and its contents are subsequently subjected to an isostatic pressure of 2000 atmospheres in a pressure vessel, after which the pressed compact is removed and subjected to a sintering operation in an atmosphere of H 2 or cracked NH 3 on a bed of refractory oxide at 1500‹ C. for a period sufficient to effect liquid phase sintering of both powder compositions. The metal alloy components are integrally connected without a sharp line of demarcation between the compositions "A" and "B". In order to produce a hollow projectile body two concentric tubes may be introduced into the rubber bag and subsequently the respective powder mixtures introduced one between the outer tube and the bag and the other between the two tubes, leaving the inner tube empty, the outer tube being withdrawn after or during the charging operation. The powder mixture "A" may comprise WC, Co or W, Ni, Fe, Mo, while powder mixture "B" may comprise W, Ni, Fe or W, Ni, Cu, the tungsten content being at least 80 wt.per cent.
