Abstract

1514785 Luminescent materials PHILIPS ELECTRIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Sept 1975 [1 Oct 1974] 39524/75 Heading C4S A method of preparing a luminescent alkaline earth metal fluorohalide activated by bivalent Eu of formula Ba 1-x-y- p Sr x Ca y Eu p FX wherein 1#x+y+p, 0À20#y#0, 0À20#y#0, 0À20#p#0À001 and X is one or more of Cl, Br or I, comprises making an aqueous suspension of alkaline earth metal fluoride containing 1 mole of dissolved alkaline earth metal halide (other than fluoride) per mole of alkaline earth fluoride and which may contain Eu as europium halide in amount at most equal the amount desired in the fluorohalide, evaporating the suspension to dryness at 50‹ to 250‹C, mixing the resulting product with the amount (if any) of europium halide which still may be required, subjecting to at least one treatment at 600‹C to 1000‹C in a weakly reducing atmosphere, and, after cooling, treating at 600‹C to 850‹C in an inert or weakly reducing atmosphere. The phosphor produced exhibits reduced persistence as required for X-ray intensifier screens used with photographic film. Traces of oxygen which may increase persistance are avoided. Preferably p moles of EuX 3 /mole of fluorohalide are added after evaporation to dryness, and preferably the product is ground before final heating. Ba 1-p Eu p FCl is a preferred composition. The crystals have Pb/FCl structure and tetragonal symmetry. U.V. and electron excitation is mentioned.
