Abstract
For the purpose of activation or reactivation, coal particles are continuously passed from a conveying device (2, 3, 4, 5) into a fluidised bed (8). The fluidised bed (8) is located above a screen (1). A hot gas laden with water vapour is generated by means of a burner device (9, 11, 12) and injected into the fluidised bed (8) through the screen (1). Associated with the fluidised bed (8) there is an overflow (6) via which the coal particles are discharged. The overflow (6) determines the height of the fluidised bed, the screen (1) determining the width and length of the fluidised bed. The fluidised-bed height is at most 12 cm, preferably from 3 to 7 cm, and the fluidised-bed length is four times the fluidised-bed width. In a fluidised bed having these dimensions, the coal particles have a vertical velocity component sufficiently large for good mixing, but only a minimal horizontal velocity component, so that all the coal particles on average reside for virtually the same length of time in the fluidised bed and adopt the same mean temperature. As a result, uniform activation or reactivation is achieved. <IMAGE>
