Abstract
1513148 Vehicle headlamps ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 23 May 1975 [24 Oct 1974] 22478/75 Heading F4R A polarized headlamp comprises a light source not shown, disposed at the focus F o of a parabolic mirror 10 and an interference polarizer 12 arranged across the mouth of the mirror, the polarizer having a series of ridges or steps 121- 132 and means being provided for rotating the direction of polarization of that component of the light which is reflected by the polarizer back towards the mirror and is returned by the mirror to the polarizer. The light reflected by the polarizer is polarized at 90 degrees to the direction of polarization of the light transmitted by the polarizer, and the rotation may be effected by two #/2 films F 1 , F 2 which are semicircular in shape and are dispoed over the upper and lower halves, respectively, of the polarizer. The polarizer is encased in glass bodies 9a, 9b and the front of the lamp is covered by an absorption polarizer P. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the two #/2 films are superimposed in the upper half of the lamp. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) the upper half (12a) of the interference polarizer has horizontal ridges and the lower half (12b) has vertical ridges, the #/2 films being disposed on the side of the polarizer remote from the mirror so that all the emitted light has 45 degrees polarization. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,421,404.
