Drip retaining and separating devices; sediment, retaining and separating; discharge devices. -A drip preventing or retaining and separating device for bottles, decanters, &c. comprises a cylindrical or funnel-shaped member having a sharp edge over which the liquid flows and attachable on or in the neck of the vessel by an elastic member forming an air-tight joint. As shown in Fig. 4, the member a is funnel-shaped and has a sharp edge c which quickly cuts off the stream of liquid as the vessel is returned from the pouring to the upright position. The member a may 'be made of metal, wood, celluloid, &c. and is secured on the neck of the vessel d by an elastic rubber sleeve b, which may be arranged either as shown or with the lower edge turned up into contact with the vessel near its mouth, the joints in each case being air-tight. Liquid which would otherwise run down the outside of the vessel accumulates at h and may be prevented from being poured out by the provision of a partition j. The member a may be drawn up above the mouth of the vessel to form a funnel. As shown in Fig. 10, the member a is held within the neck of a bottle d by a rubber ring n, a similar construction being used for a decanter. The member may be provided with a lid o hinged at p, and its lower edge q may be bent inwards to cause sediment to pass and be retained between the base of the member and the inner wall of the neck. Another form of lid u, Fig. 12, is secured to a rod v slidable freely in sockets x held centrally in the member by three or four wires t, a collar y limiting the outward movement of the rod. The member may, in another form, be held inside the neck by an external socket with claws engaging the base of a projection on the neck, a rubber ring forming an air-tight joint at the mouth and a gauze strainer being provided at the lower end of the member.
