1512082 Machinery safety devices D V PULL 5 Aug 1976 [5 May 1975] 18644/75 Heading F2J A safety guard arrangement at the rear of a press brake 11 comprises a lower fixed mesh guard 12 and an upper movable mesh guard 13 having a vertical space 14 therebetween, the upper guard 12 being movable between an open (Fig. 3) and a closed (Fig. 1) position and being provided with a cam operated interlock switch 15 interconnected with the press brake controls such that the press brake 11 can be operated only when the upper guard is in its closed position (Fig. 1), the arrangement being such that when the upper guard 13 is in its closed position (Fig. 1) the space 14 can be used by an operator for unloading workpieces (such as garage doors) from the rear of the press brake 11 and for permitting access of the operator to back stops and gauges &c. of the press brake 11 but not to its trapping area, and when the upper guard 13 is in its opened position (Fig. 3) the operator has access to the trapping area of the press brake 11, but cannot enter the region between the guards 12, 13 and the rear of the press brake 11 without climbing over or on to the fixed guard 12, the latter action of which would be an infringment of the Health and Safety Act. When access to the trapping area is required, the upper guard 13 is initially pivoted about its upper edge to a partly opened position (Fig. 2, not shown) and operates via a cam (not shown) the interlock switch 15 to render the press brake controls inoperative, after which the guard 13 is upwardly moved from the partly open position (Fig. 2) to its fully open position of Fig. 3. The lower fixed guard 12 may be arranged vertically (Figs. 1 to 3) are inclined (21) or horizontal (22) as illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown).
