1511329 Surgical cutting appliances E B RITCHEY 28 July 1975 [30 July 1974 5 Aug 1974 10 Oct 1974 10 Feb 1975] 31429/75 Heading A5R [Also in Division B4] A tool for slitting an animal's ear and inserting a tag of the type shown in Fig. 2, comprises an elongate member having a pointed skin-piercing end 26 for forming a slit in the animals ear, a slotted portion spaced from the end 26 and intended for holding the wings 10, 12 of the head of the tag in a folded position during passage through the slit and a handle portion 22. In the embodiment of Fig 7 there are two slots on either side of a central bar 36 the forward end of which is bent upwardly to provide a recess in which the tip 14 of the tag is received to prevent catching on the ear on passage through the slit. In the embodiment of Fig. 9 the tool is of generally tubular form and of oval crosssection the wale being cut away towards the piercing end to form a slot 60; in use the tag overlies the tool, the wing portions being folded through the slot 60 into the interior of the tool (Fig. 10 not shown). In other embodiments (Figs. 12-19 not shown) one or both of the slots is or are longer than the tag wings and the central bar is arranged to provide a camming action to facilitate release of the tag head from the tool. Release of the tool may be effected by movement in a reverse direction after piercing the ear and inserting the tag head or by continuing the movement to pass the tool completely through the ear.
