Abstract

1511050 Seals CRANE PACKING Ltd 10 Dec 1976 [12 Dec 1975] 50954/75 Heading F2B In a centrifugal pump shaft seal assembly having a normally operative main rotary face seal 3 and a throttle bush seal 6 which although out of actual contact with the shaft 1, has only a small clearance thereon to restrict the overall loss of fluid from the pump, in the event of partial or total failure of the face seal 3, to an acceptable amount, the throttle bush seal 6 additionally carries a lip seal 10-12 radially slidably mounted in a groove 13 to radially float therein, to accommodate slight radial movements of the shaft 1, whereby any slight leakage in service is avoided, and, particularly in the event of failure of the face seal 3, or when the pump is stationary, full line pressure may be held indefinitely by the lip seal 3, the greater the pressure of any fluid leakage acting thereon the greater its sealing effect on the shaft 11. The lip seal 3 may be of PTFE and retained in the bush seal 6 by rolling or peening over the end of the bush seal 6.
