Abstract

1510577 Production of gas from solid carbonaceous fuel TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 17 July 1976 29827/76 Heading C5E A gas stream principally comprising one or more of the gases CO, CO 2 , H 2 , H 2 O, CH 4 , H 2 S, COS, N 2 and Ar is prepared by: (1) mixing liquid CO 2 and solid particles of carbonaceous fuel in a mixing zone to produce a substantially water-free pumpable slurry; (2) introducing the slurry at a temperature of from - 69 to + 1200‹F. and a pressure of 76 to 4500 p.s.i.a., and a free-oxygen-containing gas at a temperature of from 80 to 500‹F. and a pressure of from 76 to 4500 p.s.i.a. into the reaction zone of a free-flow non-catalytic gas generator; and (3) partially oxidizing the carbonaceous fuel with the free-oxygen-containing gas in the reaction zone at an autogenous temperature of from 1200 to 3000‹F. and a pressure of from 30 to 4400 p.s.i.a. Optional additional steps comprise (4) cooling and cleaning the gas stream from (3) and separating entrained solid particles; (5) increasing the H 2 /CO ratio of the gas by subjecting at least a portion thereof to the water-gas shift reaction with or without the addition of supplemental H 2 O; (6) purifying and separating the gas stream from (5) into the following gaseous streams; (a) a dry CO 2 - rich stream substantially comprising CO 2 and minor amounts of HIS and COS; (b) optionally, a vent stream substantially comprising CO 2 and a trace of H 2 S; (c) a dry H 2 S-rich stream comprising the remainder of all the H 2 S produced, substantially all of the COS produced and CO 2 ; and (d) a dry product stream substantially comprising CO and H 2 ; (7) the stream (6)(a) is liquified and (8) at least a portion of the liquid stream from (7) is introduced in (1) as the liquid CO 2 . Most preferably the carbonaceous fuel is coal and air or substantially pure oxygen is used as the free-oxygen-containing gas.
