Abstract

1510223 Non-waven fabrics; papermaking SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 5 Nov 1975 45931/75 Headings D1R and D2B [Also in Division C3] A process for producing non-woven fabrics comprises applying to a fibre web a polymer emulsion produced by polymerising a monomer mixture which comprises ethylene and vinyl acetate in the presence of an anionic emulsifier, a polyoxyethylene nonionic emulsifier, and a partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol, these materials being present in an amount 10-30 parts by weight of the polyoxyethylene nonionic emulsifier and 0.5-5 parts by weight of the partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol per 100 parts by weight of the anionic emulsifier and then treating the web with a coagulant. The monomer mixture may additionally contain vinyl chloride, an acrylic ester, an unsaturated. acid or a compound containing an epoxy or methylol group. Materials useful for the preparation of non-woven fabrics include regenerated cellulose fibres, polyester fibres, acetate fibres, polyvinyl alcohol fibres, polyvinyl chloride fibres and cottons. Suitable coagulants are calcium chloride, magnesium chloride or aluminium sulphate. In a specific Example a non-woven fabric is produced by treating rayon fibres with a polymer emulsion prepared by polymerising ethylene and vinyl acetate in the presence of a mixture of sodium lauryl sulphate and polyoxyethylene nonyl phenol ether and subsequently using CaCl 2 as the coagulant. Paper-like material is produced from organic or inorganic fibres in a process involving adding to the fibrous pulp, as a binder for the fibres, a polymer emulsion produced by polymerising a monomer mixture which comprises ethylene and vinyl acetate in the presence of an anionic emulsifier, a polyoxyethylene nonionic emulsifier, and a partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol, these materials being present in an amount 10-30 parts by weight of the polyoxyethylene nonionic emulsifier and 0.5-5 parts by weight of the partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol per 100 parts by weight of the anionic emulsifier. The monomer mixture may additionally contain vinyl chloride, an acrylic ester, an unsaturated acid or a compound containing epoxy or methylol group. Suitable pulps which may be used are organic fibres, such as conventional pulps, synthetic pulps, rayon pulps and collagen fibres, and inorganic fibres such as asbestos, rock wool or glass fibres. Specific Examples describe the preparation of sheet material using cellulose pulp and asbestos fibres using a polymer emulsion prepared by polymerising ethylene and vinyl acetate in the presence of a mixture of sodium lauryl sulphate and polyoxyethylene nonylphenol ether.
