1510113 Making reinforced plastics tubes BICC Ltd 27 March 1975 [29 March 1974] 47785/77 Divided out of 1510112 Heading F2P An apparatus for the manufacture of circular section waveguides comprises a fixed, vertical mandrel 10 and a reciprocating annular guide 12 for re-inforcing filaments 13 (of e.g. glass fibre) which are laid longitudinally upon the mandrel. A conductive winding 1, which eventually forms part of the waeguide, is wound upon the mandrel before the reinforcement is applied. The ends 21 of the filaments are anchored by means of a plug 16 which fits the base of the mandrel. The filaments pass through circumferentially-spaced apertures 14 in the guide 12. At the end of each pass of the guide 12, the filaments are looped over projections 19 on fixed collar 18 or over projections 17 on the plug 16. The laid filaments are impregnated with a resin. Layers of helically-wound resinimpregnated filaments are wound over the longitudinally-laid layers and a sheet of aluminium folded around the reinforcement to form a moisture barrier. Finally, outermost layers of resin-impregnated tape are applied.
