Abstract
1509963 Flowmeter FIAT SpA 20 May 1975 [1 Aug 1974] 21548/75 Heading G1G The mass flow-rate of air in a duct is measured by arranging two Piezo-electric transducers to transmit ultrasonic pulse signals simultaneously towards each other and computing the mass flowrate from the signal propagation times and airpressure data, part of the receiving system for the ultrasonic signals being made inoperative during the pulse transmission. In the embodiment described two Piezo-electric transducers are spaced along the axis of the air duct to avoid vortex generation and are simultaneously pulsed through respective transmit/receive switches. The pulse duration and transducer damping are such that transducer vibrations in response to the pulse die away before the arrival at either transducer of the ultrasonic wavetrain from the other. The two arriving wavetrains pass through respective noise-excluding gates to a circuit which gives an output pulse train of pulse width proportional to the instantaneous air velocity. This pulse train is integrated to give an average velocity signal which is then multiplied by a representation of the airpressure in the duct to obtain a measure of the mass flow-rate.
