Abstract

1370588 Acoustic flow meter WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 19 Feb 1973 [1 March 1972] 8052/73 Heading H4D [Also in Division G4] The flow velocity of a liquid 20 relative to two transducers 11, 12 is measured by simultaneously transmitting an acoustic signal from each transducer, measuring the time delay before receipt of the signal at each transducer and calculating the flow velocity from the elapsed time by digital programmable means. The time measurement device 16 comprises two elapsed time counters and a source of clock pulses. Transmission of the acoustic signal from 13 initiates the feeding of clock pulses to a first counter. This count is stopped and a pulse feed to the second counter started on receipt of a signal from either receiver A or B. The count in the second counter is stopped on receipt of a signal from the other receiver. The counter readings then represent the elapsed times. The digital processor comprises a preprocessor, a programming unit and an arithmetic unit. Its caldilation and function can be altered by changing plug-in modules and it includes self checking apparatus and means for checking that the elapsed time signals fall within a predetermined time span. The apparatus may comprise several transducers which can be selectively grouped in pairs for measurement. The output display may indicate flow velocity, flow direction and mass flow rate.
