1509849 Switching coaxial connections COMPAGNIE INDUSTRIELLE DES TELECOMMUNICATIONS CIT-ALCATEL SA 11 Nov 1976 [21 Nov 1975] 46998/76 Headings H1N and H1R A switch for switching coaxial connections comprises a coaxial "input" terminal 1, a plurality of coaxial "output" terminals 2 to 7 and a corresponding plurality of electrical connections between the "input" terminal and each of the "output" terminals, each connection being provided by a pair of relays 21, 22 to 71, 72 connected in series, the relays and interconnecting leads being housed in the compartments of a hollow metal block which is internally divided into a plurality of shielded compartments distributed in two layers (Figs. 2, 4 and 5, not shown), each layer having a cover (14) opening on to one of the major surfaces of the block and containing the relays and interconnecting leads, relay operating terminals 19 and the coaxial terminals being situated on one or more of the minor surfaces of the block. The relays 21, 31, 41 are located in a main compartment 9 and relays 22, 32, 42 in peripheral compartments 11, 10, 12 respectively in one layer, Fig. 3, while relays 51, 61, 71 are in a corresponding main compartment and relays 52, 62, 72 in corresponding peripheral compartments in the other layer, the main compartments communicating via a central pit (13) in which the connection between the input terminal and the relays 21, 31, 41, 51, 61 and 71 is made. As described the relays are miniature mercury relays in which a column of mercury is moved by expansion of a gas heated by a filament, but other types of relay such as dry reed relays, mechanical relays or relays based on P.I.N. diodes may alternatively be used.
