Abstract

Compounds which have antimicrobial activity and epidermal tolerability and are of the formula <IMAGE> are prepared from wastes from the synthesis of 4-chloro-2-methylphenol. In formula I, R<1> is CH2 or CHCH3, R<2> and R<3> are H or Cl. The fore-run from the distillation of the reaction mixture from the chlorination of 2-methylphenol is correspondingly aralkylated. The fore-run consists principally of 2-chloro-6-methylphenol as well as minor amounts of 2-methylphenol and/or 4-chloro-2-methylphenol. Before the aralkylation, the content of 2-methylphenol and 4-chloro-2-methylphenol can be reduced. The product of the formula I is obtained by distillation and/or crystallisation.
