Abstract

1509358 Phenol-formaldehyde novolak compositions MOSKOV KHIMIKO-TEKHNOLOGICHE INST IM DI MENDELEEVA 23 July 1976 30780/76 Heading C3R A composition comprises a phenolformaldehyde novolak oligomer and from 10-10 p.b.w. per 100 p.b.w. of said oligomer of a hardening agent which is an adduct of hexamethylenetetramine with a mono- or poly-hydroxybenzene or with an alkyl derivative thereof and having the general formula where R is selected from hydrogen, hydroxyl, methyl or ethyl, and n is 1 or 2, or a mixture ofsuch adducts, and optionally boric acid or a salt thereof in an amount of from 1-10 p.b.w. per 100 p.b.w. of the hardening agent. The compositions may also contain conventional components, e.g. fillers such as sawdust, ground coke, graphite, quartz powder, kaolin, ground mica, microasbestos, powdered metals, glass fibres, carbon fibres, asbestos fibres, natural and synthetic polymer fibres, textile fabrics, fabrics from carbon and asbestos fibres and glass fabrics; lubricants, e.g. stearin, metal stearates and oleic acid; functional additives e.g. calcium and manganese oxides; dyes; pigments; blowing agents and plasticizers. The compositions are prepared by grinding and mixing the components followed by rolling or extruding the mixture and then grinding. In the examples compositions are prepared from a phenol-formaldehyde novolak oligomer of M.Wt. 600-1000, sawdust, calcium stearate, CaO and either sodium tetraborate or potassium tetraborate or boric acid and as hardening agent an adduct of hexamethylenetetramine and either (i) resorcinol, or (ii) phloroglucinol, or (iii) phenol, or (iv) a mixture of resorcinol, 2,5 - dimethylresorcinol and 5 - methylresorcinol. Compositions are also prepared from the said oligomer and an adduct of hexamethylenetetramine and either resorcinol or 5 - ethylresorcinol. The compositions are cured by heating. Uses:-Moulding powders; foams; foundry tools; abrasive articles; coating; adhesives.
