Abstract
1509277 Flowmeter FIAT SpA 14 May 1975 [30 May 1974] 20381/75 Heading G1G In a system for measuring the flow-rate of air in a pipe by transmitting bursts of ultrasonic waves alternately upstream and downstream by means of a pair of Piezo-electric transducers and determining the relative phases of the bursts received at the transducers, the first pulse within the burst is used as a reference point for the phase determination and the burst results from "ringing" of the transducer. Fig. 1 shows an embodiment having transducers 16, 18 on the induction pipe 14 of an internal combustion engine. A clocked bi-stable device 22 controls switches 24, 26 for alternate energization of the transducers. Processor 30 determines the relative phases of the received bursts, using the first pulse as the reference point. Subsequent circuits (not shown), compute the mass flow and give a signal for controlling fuel feed to the engine.
