Abstract

1509046 Sterilising apparatus TOYO SEIKAN KAISHA Ltd 10 June 1975 [18 June 1974 22 April 1975 (3)] 24887/75 Heading A2D An apparatus for continuously sterilising substances contained in discrete packages comprises a sealed chamber, a vessel within said chamber for containing a heating medium, a space within said chamber for containing cooling water, an endless conveyor disposed within said chamber and arranged to be driven so as to pass successively through said vessel and said space, said conveyer including a plurality of carrier receivers spaced apart along its length, a rotary valve inlet device through which a rotary carrier of packages may enter the chamber to be received by a carrier receiver whilst substantially preventing leakage of heating medium or cooling water and a rotary valve outlet device through which a said carrier of packages may leave the chamber from a carrier receiver whilst substantially preventing leakage of heating medium or cooling water. An apparatus of the above type is shown in Fig. 2 and comprises sealed chamber 21 provided with a heating medium vessel 22 which may accommodate steam, air and steam or hot water. A cooling section 23 is provided in a lower portion of the chamber. An endless conveyor chain is installed in the chamber and this chain is provided with a series of container receivers 29. The chamber is provided with inlet and outlet devices 30 or 31 which permit the access or exit of rotary carriers 37 which contain a plurality of packages to or from the container receivers. Both inlet and outlet devices are provided with sealing systems 32 and 33, which systems in the form of rotarytype valves 35 prevent the loss of heating medium and cooling water from the apparatus. The sealing systems are provided with inlet passages 47a and 47b (Fig. 5, not shown) for admitting pressurized fluid to a gap 46 to prevent leakage of fluid from the container.
