1508972 Magnetic tape cartridge playback apparatus A J BLACK 20 March 1975 [21 Dec 1973] 59441/73 Heading G5R A transfer mechanism 42 for moving a prerecorded magnetic tape cartridge in the one of a plurality cartridge-reviewing stations 38 of a movable magazine 24 selectively aligned with a tape playback unit 20 into the unit 20 is arranged to move through a greater distance than that required for insertion of the selected cartridge into unit 20 so that a buffer device 54, 56 of the transfer mechanism is compressed to provide a knuckling action on the cartridge in the playback unit 20, to maintain the cartridge in an operative position therein. The magazine may be rectilinearly movable or rotated by a motor 36 via a slipping clutch 34, and has ten cartridge-receiving sleeves 38. The transfer mechanism moves the selected cartridge vertically and comprises a shaft 42 reciprocated by a motor 50 and supporting a cartridge-engaging plate 54 via springs 56. Motor 36 moves the magazine until a peg 64 thereon actuates the one of ten stationary microswitches (66), Fig. 2 (not shown), corresponding to a selected cartridge to indicate that this cartridge is then aligned with playback unit 20. Motor 36 is then stopped, a solenoid (62) de-energized so that a latch holds the magazine in the selected position, and motor 50 is energized to transfer the selected cartridge to playback unit 20 which is activated by a cartridge-operated microswitch. A metal foil on the tape initiates return of the selected cartridge from the playback unit 20 to the magazine.
