Abstract

904,370. Sound-on-film juke boxes. GODIN, G. M., BOURG, R. D., and PERIER, R. I. Jan. 23 1959, No. 2569/59. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XX] Apparatus for the projection of one of a number of different sound and motion picture films comprises a sound and motion picture projector and selecting means for choosing and projecting a desired film, the selecting means comprising a base with a series of reels each supporting a film disposed round the periphery of the base which is rotatable to bring a chosen reel into a position where the film on it can be engaged by mechanism for feeding it through the projector to optically project the picture sequence and reproduce audibly the sound track. As shown, supply spools 10 for sound and picture films 1 are carried by a disc 6 rotatable by a rubber roller 19 driven by a motor 18. When a coin is inserted in the machine a selector mechanism is released for manual operation and such operation energizes the motor 16. When the chosen film 1 is in position for feeding an electromagnet 9 is energized stopping the motor 16, the magnet core latching the disc 6 by engaging in a notch in the frame 7 and displacing against return springs a block 8 having a magnetic insert to which is attracted a metal hook 4 secured to the end of the film 1 so that the hook 3 on the leader strip 2 threaded through the projector passes through the opening 12 in the end of the film, and thereafter the electromagnet causes the projector drive motor to start so that the leader strip latches on to the film to feed it through the picture gate P and sound head 15. When the performance has finished, a contact finger of the switch 22 which bears on the film operates the switch, closing the circuit to the motor 18 and a solenoid 21 which tilts the motor and its driven rubber roller 19 so that the roller engages the reel 10 to rewind the film and reverses the projector motor. When the hook 4 reaches the finger 5, this finger 5 is moved upwardly to engage the lever 22, and operate the switch 22 to break the circuit to solenoid 21 and motor 18 thus stopping rewinding of the film, whereupon the hook 3 disengages from the hook 4 so separating film and leader strip, the finger 5 returning under gravity to the position shown and the selecting mechanism de-energizes the electromagnet 9 and energizes the motor 16 to return the platform to its original position. In a modification, the finger 5 instead of sliding in a guideway is mounted on a rail and the film and leader strip are arrested in their end positions by wedges rotated by the film and strip whereafter the electromagnet 9 is de-energized. In this modification the film has no terminal hook but a pair of longitudinally-spaced apertures in which a similarly spaced pair of hooks on the leader strip engage.
