Abstract

1508771 Magnetic flaw detection BRITISH STEEL CORP 3 April 1975 [3 April 1974] 14808/74 Heading G1N A method for testing ferromagnetic strip material for inclusions involves applying to the strip a magnetic field generated independently of and at one side only of the strip and subjecting to the influences of the region so magnetized a suspension of ferromagnetic particles in a liquid carrier. A rigid sheet 4 of non-magnetic material supports a sheet 6 of tin plate under test. Disposed beneath the support sheet is an array of electromagnets (8), Fig. 2 (not shown), connected to a D.C. source. Mild steel bars (14) extend transversely of the rows of magnets to strap like poles together. A manifold 20 supplies the magnetic ink which is collected in a gulley 22 for recycling after passage over the test sheet.
