Abstract

1508709 Killing weeds SOC D'ETUDES ET DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES DE CORBEIL 21 Sept 1976 39128/76 Heading A1E A machine for applying a liquid weedkiller to plants comprises a frame adapted to be towed by a tractor and an applicator drum 9 driven about a transverse axis by an electric motor through reduction gearing. Liquid is applied to the surface of the drum, and thence to the plants, by a number of rollers 23 &c. mounted between arms 21, 22, pivotally attached to the frame member 2, and resting on, and driven by the drum. Each roller 23 &c. is hollow and provided with a covering of spongy material 41 which absorbs the liquid, which is contained in the rollers, through holes 40 in the roller wall; end wheels 36, 37 on the rollers prevent excessive compression of the spongy material 41. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the liquid is fed by a wick 55 from a supply 54 to an endless plant-contacting belt around two rollers 51, 52. Alternatively a wick may be used to interact directly with a single applicator drum. The rollers 23 may be suspended from chains 46 when not in use and a gutter may then be positioned under the drum to catch drips therefrom.
