Abstract

1508657 Surgical needle ETHICON INC 19 May 1975 [1 July 1974] 21199/75 Heading DIG A controlled release needle-suture combination comprises a needle recessed at its blunt end to receive a suture comprising a normally crystalline oriented synthetic polymer which when heated to a temperature below its melting point becomes laterally swollen, the suture being removable from the recess by the application of a straight pulling zone of less than 30 oz. Suitable sutures are polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, nylon or a homopolymer or copolymer of lactide and/or glycolide. The recess may be bottle shaped or cylindrical and be threaded or have annular ridges. Methods of forming the bottle shaped recess are described. After the suture is disposed within the recess the needle is heated by conduction, induction or by infra-red, microwave or resistance heating.
