Abstract

1477615 Sutures ETHICON INC 26 Feb 1975 [27 Feb 1974] 8034/75 Heading A5R [Also in Division Dl] The force required to pull a suture from the swaged hole or channel of a surgical needle is reduced to a desired value by applying a sufficient force to the suture to move it relatively to the needle and releasing the force when the latter has fallen to the desired value. The movement of the end (18 Fig. 4 not shown) of the suture relative to the end (20) of the suture receiving opening may be between 42% and 50% of the length of that opening. Several examples of different suture materials and sizes are given; the pull out forces lie between 2 and 26 ounces. The suture materials exemplified include braided silk, polyester, virgin silk, covered silk, monofil polypropylene, catgut, extruded collagen, braided polyhydroxyacetic ester, a synthetic copolymer of L(-)lactide and glycolide, nylon, cotton and linen.
