Abstract

1508181 Roller skates A BARDY 10 March 1975 9819/75 Heading A6D [Also in Division F2] A roller skate includes two forward and two rearward wheels on a front chassis portion, two further wheels on a rear chassis portion, a hinge connecting the two chassis portions and brakes for the rearward wheels of the front chassis portion. The skate shown includes front and rear casters 26, 28 respectively and wheels 27 rotatable about a fixed axis. A front chassis portion 24, which includes side walls 76a, 76b, mounts the front casters 26 and the wheels 27. A rear chassis portion 25, which mounts the rear casters 28, is pivotable relative to the front chassis portion (Fig. 7-not shown) about hinge pins 29a (29b) which are received in holes (30a) 30b formed in the side walls 76a, 76b. The front casters 26 are normally spring-urged to the straight ahead position shown. The rear casters 28 are spring-urged to positions in which their trailing ends touch (Fig. 2-not shown), in which positions their vertical swivel pins 67a, 67b may be locked (Figs. 3, 4-not shown) by rods 61a, 61b being moved rearwardly. Such rearward movement of the rods 61 is imparted by a lever 31, actuatable by the user's shin. Actuation of lever 31 also performs two other functions. Firstly, through wires or cords 35a (35b), it pivots levers 37a (37b) to brake the wheels 27 (Figs. 18, 22- not shown)-see Division F2. Secondly, through rods 79a (79b), it releases plates 54a, 54b (also Figs. 5 and 8-not shown) from positions in which they grip the user's heel. The plates 54 are movable into their heelgripping positions by mechanism actuatable by a foot-depressible bar 51. The positions of the gripping plates 54 is adjustable (Figs. 9-12-not shown). A mechanism 83-88 (also Figs. 14-17-not shown) automatically locks the lever 31 in its actuated position and is releasable upon the lever 31 being pivoted counter-clockwise beyond the actuated position. A device 44-49 is manually operable to perform the functions of lever 31. The wheels 27 are provided with ratchet clutches (Figs. 18-21-not shown)-see Division F2- to prevent reverse rotation thereof.
