Film evaporators; evaporators and condensers in structural combination; acids, saccharine solutions &c., concentrating; alcoholic and ammoniacal liquids, hydrocarbons &c., distilling. - In evaporating liquids and recovering the vapours or gases obtained thereby by means of a current of gas which circulates through a closed circuit comprising an evaporator and means for separating the vapours from the gas, the evaporator comprises stationary or moving surfaces which are alternately immersed in the liquid and exposed to the gas. The vapour-separating means may be either a surface or jet condenser or a hygroscopic or other absorbing-liquid. In distilling alcohol, the vapours are condensed by contact with cold alcohol. In distilling ammonia, water is used as an absorbent. The apparatus may also be used for distilling hydrocarbons, and for concentrating acids and sugar and saline solutions. One form of apparatus, Fig. 1, comprises an evaporator 2 which may be heated, and is fitted with rotating cross-boards 10 or disks, and a surface condenser consisting of gilled tubes 8 provided with collectors 11, 12 for the condensate. The gases, circulated by a fan 9, pass from the evaporator over heat-exchanging tubes 4 to the condenser, and back through the tubes 4 and a heater 6 to the evaporator. Forms of apparatus in which the vapours are separated by contact with a condensing or absorbing liquid are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. In Fig. 3, the evaporator 2 and vapour-separator 2<1> are provided with rotating disks. In Fig. 4, plates 10" are alternately dipped into and lifted out of the liquid. In Fig. 5, a vessel containing plates 16 is divided by a partition 15 into compartments which are connected by a passage 17. The liquid is made to oscillate by means of a pump 18 so that the plates in each compartment are alternately covered and uncovered by the liquid.
