Abstract

1507843 Transferring liquids through pipelines ANIC SpA 19 June 1975 [1 July 1974] 26203/75 Heading F2N A system for conveying a plurality of pure liquids along a single tube having an intermediate inlet/outlet port, from and to one of a number of pipes, each of which carries one of the pure liquids, has a conduit attached to either end of the tube for communicating with any one or the same pipe of the number of pipes, and a system for separating the pure liquids to be conveyed by means of spheres and an inert liquid miscible with said pure liquids between adjacent spheres. In the embodiment described conduits 10, 11 and tube 23 are filled with liquid L<SP>1</SP> which has been conveyed through pipe 1. It is desired to convey liquid L<SP>5</SP> between pipe 5 and inlet/outlet 20. Inert liquid, e.g. water, is pumped from container 14 via pump 13 and conduit 10 forcing liquid L<SP>1</SP> into pipe 1, and when the inert liquid reaches pump 12 or device 15 a sphere, "pig" 17, is released into said tube. A known volume of inert liquid is pumped in and a second "pig" 18 released. A second volume of inert liquid is released and a third "pig" 19 released to separate the inert liquid and liquid L<SP>5</SP> which is now pumped from pipe 5 such that tube 23 is filled over most of its length by liquid L<SP>5</SP> and spheres 17, 18 have reached collecting vessel 16. Outlet 20 is thus in communication with liquid L<SP>5</SP> in the tube 23. Liquid L<SP>5</SP> may then be pumped direct from pipe 5 via conduit 10 to outlet 20. For feeding liquid L<SP>5</SP> to pipe 5 from inlet 20, conduit 11 is connected to a branch connection of pipe 5 and sphere 19 with inert "plug" liquid collected in vessel 16 and appropriate valves shut such that liquid 5 passes from inlet 20 via tube 23 and conduit 11 to pipe 5.
