Abstract
1507791 Lasers SPECTRA-PHYSICS Inc 27 Jan 1976 [7 Feb 1975] 3155/76 Heading H1C A gas laser discharge tube comprises a tubular glass envelope 10, Fig. 1, with annular metal plates 16, 30 carrying resonator mirrors 36, 38 sealing its ends, the envelope containing a capillary plasma tube 12 supported by a flared portion 14 which is bonded to the envelope adjacent the plate 16, and further containing a tubular cathode 24 electrically connected to the plate 30 by a spring positioning clip 28 used to locate the cathode against a constriction 60 in the envelope. Plate 16 serves as an anode to produce a capillary gas discharge using Ne-Ne as a typical lasing gas. The cantilevered capillary tube is supported by fingers (not shown) of a support member 22 which engages the inner surface of the tubular cathode. Included in the structure is a getter 82 and a gas filling duct 40. Tuning for optimum performance is effected by slightly bending the tube during operation in a sequential manner along a plurality of radial planes and noting the plane in which maximum output is produced. The tube is then released and one mirror is realigned by deforming the supporting annular plate by mechanical shock in the optimum plane. An assembly process is described in which the components are bonded together with the aid of supporting jigs.
