Abstract
1507707 Thermal or strain gradient sensor MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 5 May 1975 [6 May 1974 (2)] 18773/75 Heading H1K A sensor for detecting and producing a remanent electrostatic image of the temperature or strain gradient of a body surface comprises a sheet of material which has been formed into an electret with pyro- and piezo-electric properties, the surface of the sheet to be brought into contact with the body surface being coated with electrically and thermally conductive material. After sufficient contact time, both surfaces of the sheet are electrically neutralized, then removed from the body surface. As the sheet returns to ambient temperature or its normal configuration, a substantially per. manent charge pattern re-forms, which may be developed using toner particles or electrically recorded, alternatively the charge pattern may be detected in situ. To avoid spurious piezoelectric effects, the sheet may consist of two sheets bonded together by adhesive providing a sufficiently stiff interface, the sheets being poled in the same direction.
