Abstract
1507154 Grinding tool J C J WIRTH 24 April 1975 16204/77 Divided out of 1507153 Heading C4V A grinding tool comprises abrasive particles mixed with a grinding aid consisting essentially of a compound free of sulphur and halogen, stable under the conditions of use and having a melting point in the range of 70‹F. to 1000‹F., a decomposition temperature at least 100‹F. above its melting temperature and a latent heat of melting greater than 10 cal/gm. The abrasive particles may be overcoated with a resin having the grinding aid dispersed therein or the abrasive particles may be formed into a porous, vitrified mass and the aid impregnated into the pores of the mass. In an alternative embodiment particles are bonded together in a resin matrix and the aid is dispersed at least partly throughout the matrix. Where the tool is a flexible sheet the abrasive particles and the aid may be deposited in the form of a coating on the backing material. The aid may be sodium nitrite, potassium nitrite, sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate, lithium nitrite, lithium nitrate, potassium dichromate or mixtures of these. Particularly preferred compound is the eutectic mixture of potassium nitrate and sodium nitrite and the eutectic mixture of potassium nitrate, sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate.
