Abstract

1506615 Reinforced cementitious material INITIAL PLASTICS Ltd 8 June 1976 [9 June 1975] 24682/75 Heading C1H A mass of concrete or cement mortar comprises hydraulic cement and aggregate and is reinforced by not less than 0À5% by volume of the aggregate of injection-moulded bodies composed of thermoplastic polymeric material (e.g. polypropylene or nylon), the bodies being randomly orientated in at least two dimensions and being each shaped so that it forms a mechanical key with the surrounding matrix of cement and aggregate, the key being such as to resist separation of the body from the matrix when only a minor proportion of the total volume of the body is embedded in the matrix. The bodies may have a maximum dimension between ¥ and 3 inches and may consist of a ring with a series of radiating arms which have enlarged heads at their free ends (see Fig. 2). The thermoplastic material constituting the bodies may in itself be reinforced with glass fibres. The mass may be made by mixing together the hydraulic cement, aggregate and the moulded bodies together with water and casting or the mass may be a coating on a surface formed by projecting simultaneously the hydraulic cement, aggregate, moulded bodies and water on to the surface, or by projecting hydraulic cement, aggregate and water on to the surface, then projecting a layer of moulded bodies on to the layer of cementitious material and finally projecting further cement, aggregate and water on to the moulded bodies to form a further layer of cementitious material.
