Abstract

1506388 Boring earth &c LILLEY-WADDINGTON Ltd 23 May 1975 [3 April 1974] 14814/74 Heading E1F Boreholes e.g. for pile foundations, are excavated by advancing a tubular casing 12 into the ground, cutting away the soil within the lower end of the casing 12 by cutting means 8 positioned within the casing adjacent the lower end, and removing the spoil by entraining it in a liquid which is fed into the upper end of the casing and extracted through at least one suction pipe 26 having an orifice 28 situated above and adjacent to the cutting means 8, the liquid extracted being passed through a sealed container where the spoil settles out and from which the liquid is returned to the casing 12 by means of at least one pump situated downstream of the container and providing the suction for extracting the liquid from the casing. In the preferred embodiment, the cutting means 8 comprises a cruciform arrangement of serrated plates 10, which are rotated by a hydraulic motor 4. This unit is retained in the casing 12 by means of fixed and movable clamping plates, 16, 18 respectively, actuated by a hydraulic cylinder 22. This latter and the motor 4 are powered by a hydraulic pump at ground level. When the clamping means are released, the unit may be raised or lowered by a suspension cable. The casing 12 is provided with a serrated cutting edge 14 at its lower end, and, as excavation proceeds, further units of casing are joined to the top. The casing 12 is filled with water or slurry to ground level or slightly below. The casing 12 is pushed into the ground by means of a rig having hydraulic rams and a clamping collar in order to oscillate the casing rotationally whilst applying a downward force. A mechanical grab may be lowered into the casing to remove large pieces of rock. In alternative arrangements, the cutting means may be supported by a shaft extending from the top of the casing, the motor being provided at the top or bottom of the casing. In situations where the casing may be extracted prior to concreting, the cutting machine might be rigidly secured within the lower unit of the casing.
