Abstract

1506031 Electronic lock MONITRON INDUSTRIES INC 2 Jan 1975 [2 Jan 1974] 82/75 Heading E2A An electronic lock has an active memory to store a first combination, means to compare it with one of second and third applied combinations e.g. on a card, inserted into the lock and open the lock if they are identical and, if not, to compare the stored combination with the other of the applied combinations, arid if they are identical to change the memory to store the first-compared applied combination instead of the first combination. As shown, the lock comprises a housing 20 with a slot 24 on the outside to receive an encoded card. A handle 30 is mounted on the inside of the door for rotation on a shaft 32 which also carries a cam plate 38 having a slot 40. A slidable bolt 42 carries a pin 50 engaged in slot 40 so that operation of the handle 30 reciprocates bolt 42. Cam plate 38 may also be rotated by a motor 76 operated by batteries 84. Bolt 42 also carries a spring-loaded latch bolt 72. Switch cams 90, 92 are secured to cam plate 38 and have recesses 91, 93 respectively, overlapping at 102 and cooperating with microswitches 98, 100, which together detect the direction in which cam plate 38 has been turned and the fully extended bolt position. Further microswitches 106, 108 are engaged by pin 50 to detect respectively the fully retracted position of bolt 42 and its position for latching of bolt 72. A further, magnetic, switch 110 on the edge of the housing detects when the door is closed by means of magnet 112. In operation, when a suitable card is inserted into slot 24, the card reader 132 switches on motor 76 to withdraw bolt 42, the motor being switched off by switch 106. The door is then opened and switch 110 switches the motor back on to move the bolt to its latching position, switch 108 switching off the motor. When the door is then closed, the motor is again switched on by switch 110 to extend the bolt fully and switched off by switches 98, 100 engaging position 102. A lock-out slide switch 114 on the inside disconnects power from reader 132 to disable the lock but it is reset by pin 50 on operation of the bolt 42 to prevent the occupant from locking himself out. For hotel use, each card may carry a new combination for each guest as well as that of the previous guest. Although the lock memory combination does not match the new inserted combination, the old combination is detected on the card and the lock memory combination changed to the new one. When a card is unused, neither combination on the next new card will match that of the lock memory and a reset card must be used to change the lock memory combination. A security pass unit (222, Fig. 10, not shown) may be plugged into slot 24 in emergency and carries its own power supply to operate motor 76 even when disconnected by switch 114.
