Abstract

1505494 Acoustic thermometer ACOUSTIC TECHNOLOGY Ltd 22 May 1975 [14 March 1974] 11340/74 Heading G1G The temperature of a gas flowing in a duct 1 is measured by determining the time taken for acoustic pulses to cross the duct. A transmitter 6 and receiver 7 are fitted on opposite sides of the duct and may be cooled by coils 8, the transmitter being connected to a pulse generator (9), Fig. 2 (not shown), which is in turn connected to a counter. The counter is activated on generation of a pulse and stopped when the receiver receives the pulse. The time counted-representative of the transit time of the pulses - may be digitally displayed or converted to analogue form for recording, for example on a chart recorder. The apparatus is calibrated by measuring the transit time at a known temperature and drawing a calibration curve using the Formula C T = CR#T/R where C T + C R are the speeds of sound at unknown and known temperatures respectively. The apparatus is suitable for use in cement kilns and steam boilers.
