Abstract

1505294 Trapping insects for feeding to aquatic animals G N NEFF 7 April 1975 14234/75 Headings A1A and A1M Aquatic animals are fed on insects which are collected by a device 20 and trapped in the enclosed air space 29 above a body of water, the insects being attracted by the lamp 24, preferably a toroidal blacklight lamp emitting near UV radiation, such that the airborne insects fly downwardly into the opaque frustoconical housing 22 until the down-draft produced by a fan 27 mounted below a baffle plate 28 draws them through the housing exit 23, and the aquatic insects move towards the water surface. The aquatic animals may be kept in a cage 10 with a platform 44 for amphibians, and the device 20 is mounted in a cover 16 supported on a float ring 18. Alternatively, a device 52 comprises a houring with vertical end walls 58, 60 and sloping side walls, a linear lamp 66 at the bottom of the housing and a fan 68 to direct insects along a pipe 54 to the surface of a body of water, (Fig. 3). A fuel burning lamp or spherical bulb may be used and the fan may be omitted. The device may be adapted for use as an insect trap.
