Abstract

1505255 Moulding double-walled articles IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 May 1975 [5 July 1974] 29896/74 Heading B5A A double-walled article is made by clamping a pair of thermoplastics sheets about a separation member to provide a sealed space between the sheets, heating at least one of the sheets to a temperature about its softening point, applying a pair of continuous frame clamps 10, 12, Fig. 3, inwardly of the separation member with sufficient pressure to bond the sheets together in the area of application of the slamps, and stretching a softened sheet by the application of vacuum to the surface of the sheet outside the sealed space until the stretched sheet takes up a desired position and the second sheet moves relative to the first sheet by an amount determined by the pressure in the space between the sheets and the temperature of the second sheet. The sheet or sheets may be heated prior to, rather than subsequent to, clamping about the separation member, and the desired pressure may be adjusted to a predetermined value before the sheets are stretched. At least one of the sheets may receive a heat activatable adhesive over the clamping area.
